Why Handwriting Workbooks Don't Work

Handwriting practice workbooks may work for a few students who just need to practice the strokes. However, many older students with poor handwriting have underlying issues that must be addressed in order to fix the handwriting. Just assigning handwriting practice won't improve their handwriting unless the core issue is fixed. Students with deficits in visual processing, auditory processing, sensory processing, fine motor skills and gross motor skills all can have problems with handwriting. The approach to remediate each issue is different. That's why it's important to work with a learning specialist who can identify the root cause of the poor handwriting.
